Does Your Child Need a Special Educator? Signs to Watch For
Every child learns differently, and normal learning struggles don't automatically mean something more is going on. But some patterns — especially when they persist despite regular tutoring — are worth a closer look by someone trained specifically for them. Here's how to tell the difference, and what to do next if you're seeing these signs.
Regular Learning Difficulty vs. a Need for Specialised Support
A child who's simply behind in one subject usually improves steadily with regular tutoring — extra practice, clearer explanations, more time. A child who may benefit from a special educator often shows a different pattern:
- Reading age is significantly behind classmates despite consistent effort and normal-or-above intelligence in conversation.
- Numbers, letters, or sequences (days of the week, times tables) reverse or jumble in a way that persists well past the age most children outgrow it.
- Understanding concepts is fine verbally, but writing it down — spelling, organising sentences, copying from the board — is disproportionately hard.
- Attention and focus struggle even in one-on-one settings, not just in a noisy classroom.
- Social communication, eye contact, or understanding of unspoken social rules seems different from peers.
- A regular home tutor has tried multiple approaches over several months with little change.
Important: None of these signs alone is a diagnosis. They're reasons to get a proper opinion from a special educator or, where needed, a developmental specialist — not something to self-diagnose from a checklist.
Special Educator vs. Shadow Teacher vs. Regular Tutor — What's the Difference?
| Role | What they do |
|---|---|
| Regular Tutor | Teaches standard curriculum content, at standard pace, for a child without additional learning needs. |
| Special Educator | Trained specifically in learning disabilities (dyslexia, dyscalculia), ASD, ADHD, and intellectual disabilities — builds an individualised plan around the child, not the syllabus. |
| Shadow Teacher | Accompanies the child in a mainstream school or at home, providing real-time one-on-one support to help them follow the regular curriculum alongside their peers. |
What to Look for in a Special Educator
- A real qualification — B.Ed (Special Education), D.Ed, or RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India) registration. This isn't a formality; it reflects actual training in how learning differences work.
- Specific experience with your child's particular need — a specialist in ASD support and a specialist in dyslexia remediation use quite different methods.
- A willingness to build and follow an Individualised Education Plan (IEP) — goals and pace built around your child, not a fixed syllabus applied uniformly.
- Comfort communicating regularly with you (and the school, for a shadow teacher) about what's working and what isn't.
What the First Few Sessions Should Look Like
A good special educator doesn't jump straight into fixed lesson content. Expect an initial period of assessment — understanding exactly where your child is strong, where they struggle, and how they learn best — before a structured plan is set. If a "special educator" starts with a generic worksheet on day one, that's worth questioning.
Talking to Your Child's School
If you're considering a shadow teacher, most schools require their permission before placement in the classroom. It's worth having this conversation early — schools are often more receptive than parents expect, since a well-supported child benefits the whole classroom, not just your own.
