- Fundamental Theorem of Arithmetic: every composite number can be written as a product of primes in a unique way (apart from order).
- For two positive integers a and b: HCF(a, b) × LCM(a, b) = a × b.
- HCF = product of the smallest power of each common prime factor; LCM = product of the greatest power of each prime factor involved.
- √p is irrational for every prime p. To prove it, assume √p = a/b in lowest terms and reach a contradiction.
- Sum or product of a non-zero rational and an irrational number is irrational (e.g. 3 + √2, 5√3).
Key formulas
- HCF × LCM = Product of the two numbers
