The Golden Swan

Long ago, a kind swan with feathers of pure gold lived on a quiet lake. Nearby lived a poor widow and her two daughters, who often went to bed hungry.

The swan felt sorry for them. One morning he flew to their hut and said, "Each time I visit, I will give you one golden feather. Sell it and buy what you need."

The family's life changed. They had food, warm clothes and a mended roof. The swan came often, and gave one feather each time.

But the mother grew greedy. "What if he stops coming?" she thought. "Let us take all his feathers at once." The next time the swan came, she grabbed him and pulled out every feather.

To her surprise, the feathers turned plain and white in her hands. A golden feather only stays golden when it is given freely. The swan, hurt and sad, waited until new feathers grew. They grew back white, and he flew away, never to return.

The family was poor again, and the mother understood her mistake too late.

Moral of the story

Greed can make us lose everything we already have. Be thankful for what you are given.
