The Monkey King's Bridge

High in the Himalayas, beside a river, stood a giant mango tree. Eighty thousand monkeys lived there, led by a wise and brave Monkey King.

"Never let a mango fall into the river," the king warned. "If people downstream taste it, they will come looking for this tree." But one ripe mango, hidden behind leaves, dropped into the water.

It floated all the way to the city, where the king of the land tasted it. "I must have more!" he said, and set off with his archers to find the tree.

That night the archers surrounded the tree. The monkeys were trapped. The Monkey King leapt across the river, tied a long vine to his waist and leapt back, but the vine was a little too short. So he stretched his own body across the gap and held on with all his strength. "Run across my back!" he cried.

One by one, all eighty thousand monkeys crossed to safety over their king's back. When the last one was across, the Monkey King was too weak to hold on any longer.

The human king had watched everything. Moved to tears, he caught the Monkey King and cared for him. "You risked your life for your people," he said. "Today you have taught me what a true king is."
