The Monkey and the Crocodile

On the bank of a wide river stood a jamun tree, heavy with sweet purple fruit. A cheerful monkey named Raktamukh lived in its branches.

One afternoon a tired crocodile rested under the tree. The monkey dropped him a handful of jamuns. "Try these, friend," he called. The crocodile loved them, and soon he came every day. The two became good friends.

The crocodile took some jamuns home to his wife. She tasted them and said, "If the fruit is this sweet, the monkey's heart must be even sweeter. Bring me his heart!"

The crocodile did not want to hurt his friend, but his wife would not stop asking. So he said to the monkey, "My wife wants to thank you. Sit on my back and I will take you to our home."

In the middle of the river, the crocodile said sadly, "I am sorry. My wife wants to eat your heart." The monkey's heart thumped, but he stayed calm. "Oh dear!" he said. "Why didn't you tell me before? I keep my heart safe in the jamun tree. Let us go back and fetch it."

The foolish crocodile swam back. The moment they reached the bank, the monkey leapt up into the tree. "Nobody keeps their heart in a tree!" he laughed. "You have lost a true friend today." The crocodile swam away, ashamed.

Moral of the story

Stay calm in danger and use your mind. A true friend never betrays your trust.
