The Lion and the Clever Rabbit

In a thick forest lived a greedy lion named Bhasuraka. He hunted far more animals than he could eat, and everyone lived in fear.

The animals held a meeting and went to the lion. "Your Majesty," they said, "stay in your den. Every day one of us will come to you as your meal." The lion agreed, but warned, "If anyone is late, I will hunt all of you!"

One day it was the turn of a small rabbit. He walked very slowly, thinking hard. When he finally reached the den, the lion roared, "Why are you so late? And you are so small!"

"Forgive me, Your Majesty," said the rabbit, bowing low. "Five rabbits were coming for you, but another lion stopped us on the way. He ate the other four and said he is the true king of this forest."

The lion shook with anger. "Another king? Show him to me at once!" The rabbit led him to a deep well. "He lives down there," he whispered.

The lion looked into the well and saw his own reflection in the water. He roared, and the well roared back. Thinking it was his enemy, the lion jumped in to fight, and was never seen again. The little rabbit hopped home, and the whole forest celebrated.
