Why We Celebrate Diwali

Long, long ago, in the kingdom of Ayodhya, lived a kind prince named Rama. He was loved by everyone for his honesty and goodness.

Because of a promise his father had made, Rama had to leave the kingdom and live in the forest for fourteen years. His wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana went with him.

In the forest, the demon king Ravana carried Sita away to his island kingdom, Lanka. Rama was heartbroken, but he did not lose hope.

With the help of the brave Hanuman and an army of monkeys and bears, Rama built a bridge of stones across the sea. After a great battle, good won over evil. Ravana was defeated and Sita was free.

When Rama, Sita and Lakshmana finally returned to Ayodhya, it was a dark new-moon night. The happy people lit thousands of clay lamps along every road and rooftop to welcome them home.

Ever since, every year, we light diyas, make rangoli, share sweets and celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights. It reminds us that light always wins over darkness.

Moral of the story

Goodness and truth always win in the end. Spread light and kindness wherever you go.
